Car hit by brick on N2 – Salt Rock
A case has been opened at Umhlali SAPS and an investigation has been launched.
A car’s windscreen was smashed by a brick on the N2 on Sunday, raising fears that the threat of rock throwers on the Dolphin Coast has not yet passed.
On Sunday afternoon Ballito resident Barbara (who asked that her full name be withheld) was travelling north on the N2.
“I had just passed the Tiffany’s off-ramp and was approaching the next bridge (P228),” she told the Courier.
“All of a sudden there was a big bang and crash and the passenger side of my windshield was shattered.”
Barbara said she immediately looked up at the bridge, but there was nobody there.
“That is when I saw some people on the side of the road from the corner of my eye.”
At first, said Barbara, she was not entirely sure what had happened – had someone thrown a rock at her, had it come from the road surface or been shot up from another vehicle?

The next day when Umhlali SAPS’ captain Vinny Pillay came to inspect the damage, he said it was most certainly a thrown object such as a rock or brick.
Barbara said she had maintained her calm and kept driving.
“I have been carjacked before and had a gun held to my head, so this was comparatively minor compared to that,” she said with a little laugh.
It was only the next day, and with Pillay’s confirmation, that she realised how serious the incident was.
“If it had hit my side of the windshield, there’s every chance I could have swerved and hit the people on the side of the road.”
She and Pillay visited the spot on the N2 where the incident happened and found the object used – a brick from the paving used to shore up beneath bridges.
“I am just glad I’m OK – now begins the process of insurance and all that.”
Pillay said a case had been opened at Umhlali SAPS and an investigation would be launched.
