Major upgrade for Stanger park

The rehabilitation is set to promote social cohesion, sustainability and community integration.

An upgraded people’s park, boasting amenities which include an amphitheater and outdoor gym, is on the cards for Stanger.

In a bid to uplift the growing town, KwaDukuza municipality is spearheading the revamp of the existing Theunissen Park – set to cost R11 million which is to be funded by KZN cooperative governance and traditional affairs.

Situated between Theunissen Road and Chief Albert Luthuli Street, the park is currently used for informal gatherings and a meeting point for community and government demonstrations.

In a report to council, the community services and public amenities business unit said phase one of the upgrade, which would turn the park into a state of the art facility, has already begun.

The rehabilitation is set to promote social cohesion, sustainability and community integration.

When complete, the project will boast informal trading stalls, an amphitheater, a children’s play area, braai facilities, picnic area, outdoor gym, yoga area, public viewing screens and outdoor furniture.

The upgrade is expected to create 250 job opportunities during construction, with 60 percent of the workers being women, 40 percent being men, 20 percent being youth and two percent being the disabled.

KwaDukuza mayor Ricardo Mthembu said Stanger was growing as a tourist destination and that upliftments to the town were a priority.

“We have a first of its kind mall in Stanger and we must now look at improving the state of the town,” said Mthembu.
