Newark fisherman’s family demands answers after body found in dam

"All he wanted was a fish so that he could have a meal with his family."

A fisherman’s family are overcome with sorrow after he was reportedly murdered and thrown into a dam on a farm in Newark where he had been fishing illegally.

Jabulani Msimangi left his house at Kwahlomendlini, Mandeni to go fishing on a dam at the Luyanda Farm on Thursday, October 11.

He was never seen alive again.

Four days later his bloated body was found at the dam in question, despite police search and rescue teams earlier checking the vicinity and confirming that he was not there.

His sister-in-law Nomusa Makhoba said Msimangi used to go fishing so that he could put food on the table.

“He was not working and all he wanted was a fish so that he could have a meal with his family. He used to leave early in the morning and return around 5pm,” said Makhoba.

On the day of his disappearance his girlfriend Samke Makhoba was worried when he did not return and she notified her neighbours and the community policing forum.

Samke Makhoba said she needs answers regarding the death of his boyfriend who died while trying to provide a meal for her and her 5-year old daughter.

They went out in search of Msimangi and found his bag and fishing rod near the dam.

The farm owner Bheki Ncayiyana confirmed that a man had been fishing illegally on his farm on the day of the incident. He had sent security guards to chase him out.

“I would be lying if I say I know what happened because the guards told me that they did not find him at the dam. I do have the problem of people illegally fishing on the dam and as soon as they see security or police they run away,” said Ncayiyana.

CPF chairperson Leonard Mdluli said they believed somone had murdered him and later attempted to hide the body in the dam, where it was then discovered.

“How does he just appear in the dam after four days of searching for him? There are more questions than answers in this issue. We hope the police will investigate and arrest those behind this murder,” said Mdluli.

Msimangi was buried on Saturday at his home in Nongoma.
