Safety is Lucky Mahanuga’s priority – Shayamoya

Mahanuga recently won the runner-up prize in the 2018 Entrepreneur competition run by the Ilembe Chamber.

Passionate about the safety industry, Lucky Mahanuga (34) from Shayamoya is now running his own security company.

Mahanuga, who grew up working as a gardener on weekends and school holidays, recently won the runner-up prize in the 2018 Entrepreneur competition run by the Ilembe Chamber.

“My dream job was to be a police officer, simply because I hate crime. However things did not go according to plan,” said Mahanuga.

He was raised by his granny in Groutville and when she died, he moved to stay with his father in Stanger who was working as a gardener, earning R150 a day.

“I was a pupil at Nonhlevu Secondary and I was not in a good fi nancial standing. I would walk from Groutville to Tshawini to save the bus fare. I also joined the KwaDukuza Athletic Club and entered races and if I won, I would get some money to help at home.”

After matric in 2008, he joined Thompson’s Tasty Meats in Umhlali as a quality controller. He used the money he earned there to get a security certificate. In 2009, he landed his first security job at Servest Security, where is is currently employed as a site supervisor at Dunkirk Estate in Salt Rock.

“I decided to start my own business and be more than an employee. There was nothing I enjoy more than keeping people safe, so starting my own security company, Act and Justice Security, made the most sense.”

The company has been operating since 2015 and he has four permanent staff . Since Mahanuga is still working, he depends on his wife Bongi, who is the managing director and his sales manager, Kgalegi Kgosi-e-Tsile to look after things while he is at work.

Act and Justice Security does security for events, construction sites, industrial and residential areas.

The father of two boys said his biggest challenge was operating without a vehicle.

However, he plans to buy one before the end of the year.
