Death toll rises in long weekend road accidents – North Coast

A long weekend marred by death and multiple accidents.

Four lives were lost on Dolphin Coast roads this weekend – two pedestrians and two occupants of vehicles involved in crashes.

Last night a man died when the driver of a single vehicle traveling on the Tinley Manor link road lost control of his vehicle and collided head-on with a bridge.

According to IPSS Medical Rescue’s Paul Herbst paramedics arrived shortly after 7pm to find six people alongside the vehicle.

“One of the passengers was declared dead shortly after the arrival of paramedics,” said Herbst.

Two more passengers were treated for critical injuries before being taken to hospital.

This followed another accident on the N2 near Tinley Manor where a single vehicle rolled multiple times leaving one person critically injured and two further with moderate injuries.

Later on Sunday night, around 11pm, another single vehicle accident saw a car rolling multiple times near the Tongaat Fairbreeze robots on the R102.

“Three passengers were ejected from the rolling car,” said Herbst.

One of the three received critical injuries.

It was shortly after this accident that a female pedestrian was struck by a vehicle on the R102 near Desainagar in Tongaat.

Herbst said they arrived to find the victim had succumbed to her injuries.

“There was also another pedestrian accident last night that left a man in a critical condition on the R102 near Sasol bakery.”

These two deaths, together with a previous two over the weekend, bring the death toll to four for Reconciliation Weekend on the North Coast.

A head-on crash in the early hours of Saturday morning saw one man lose his life and nine others, including a baby girl, receive serious injuries.

This followed an accident in upper Ballito at the intersection in front of the Shell service station where a taxi careened off another vehicle and struck a female pedestrian, killing her.
