Fireworks only allowed after midnight

Know when and where it is legal for you to set off fireworks.

Don’t find yourself on the wrong side of the law while celebrating the new year.

KwaDukuza’s bylaws state that fireworks may only be set off once midnight has arrived.

As with previous years, police are appealing to residents and holidaymakers to contain themselves to displays between minight and 2am.

The bylaws further state, “It shall be unlawful for any person to use or explode any fireworks (i) within 500m of any explosives magazine, explosives factory, petroleum depot or gas meter; or (ii) in any building or on any public thoroughfare.”

Certain types of fireworks are illegal, including “firecrackers larger than 50mm long and 12mm diameter, match crackers or match strike firecrackers commonly known as ‘Bombs’, e.g. Indian King, King India, Classic Foils etc.”

Meanwhile, the NSRI has issued a statement asking people not to light sky-lanterns.

Aside from their obvious danger as a fire-hazard, eye witnesses often mistake sky lanterns for distress flares.

Well meaning members of the public report these “flare sightings” and NSRI and other emergency services launch a full scale search and rescue operation.

These searches can continue for quite some time until it is confirmed that no persons or craft at sea are in difficulty.

One of the major concerns with fireworks are there impact on pets.
