Surveillance cameras to keep an eye on crime in KwaDukuza

KwaDukuza council last week approved in principle for number plate recognition cameras to be installed at strategic points in Ballito.

Measures to curb the growing crime rate in the KwaDukuza district are currently being put to test.

KwaDukuza municipality (KDM) has joined hands with Ethekwini municipality as well as the Ballito UIP and neighbourhood watch to install surveillance cameras around the district to make it easier to track criminal activity and determine preventative measures.

KDM media liaison officer Sipho Mkhize said the KwaDukuza council last week approved in principle for number plate recognition cameras to be installed at strategic points in Ballito.

He said this was a pilot project they were hoping to carry out throughout the district.

“We have finalised the points but we are still discussing the finer details. First, the organisations have to satisfy us with the documents which comply with the regulations for the transport department and will allow for them to collect this kind of data.”

Mkhize said the municipality was also working with Ethekwini in sharing resources to form surveillance plans for KwaDukuza CBD.

They currently have number plate recognition cameras and the project is set to roll out in about a month and will be monitored by their community safety department.

The Ballito Neighbourhood Watch started their fundraising campaigns for cameras last year and presented their proposal to KDM last October.

DA, ward 6 Ballito councillor Tammy Colley said she was delighted that there was progress.

“We have people who are working really hard to safeguard our community but they can only do so much. This is a technological addition that we really need and I am sure that we will reap the benefits.”

Colley said the parties were still to enter into a memorandum of understanding with KDM.

Mkhize added that once the project was finalised, the municipality planned to roll it out in phases.

“The aim is to start rolling out this project in one area, see how it works and roll it out in another.”
