Rape suspect plunges over bridge, cops in pursuit

The vehicle was spotted by Umhlali K9 unit members and they gave chase.

A taxi driver who was being chased by police, drove over the bridge on the N2, just before the Tinley manor off ramp on Sunday morning.

The man was wanted in connection with an alleged rape in Shaka’s Head, reportedly witnessed by some security guards.

“The woman broke free and ran for help. The taxi driver allegedly sped off and almost knocked the security guards over,” said Umhlali police spokesperson, captain Vinny Pillay.

The vehicle was spotted by Umhlali K9 unit members and they gave chase.

The driver lost control and crashed over the bridge.

The Jaws of Life had to be used to rescue the driver from the mangled wreckage before he was rushed to hospital.

“He remains in a critical condition at General Gizenga hospital in KwaDukuza,” said Pillay.
