Good Samaritan restores Radha Roopsingh Primary’s toilets

Pupils will no longer play in sewage soaked fields.

The Etete school has been facing infrastructure and maintenance issues for years, as classrooms were overcrowded and falling apart, there was a shortage of toilets and an aging sewerage system.

The school recently won R100 000 in the MySchool MyVillage MyPlanet ’21 years of Giving Back’ campaign. But the money was not enough to solve the sewerage problem or build new toilets for the school.

New seats and doors were placed on the existing toilets.

“After receiving the sponsorship, a service provider, Victor Pillay, was chosen to undertake the renovations. Although his quote was for more than the money we had, Pillay volunteered to do the project. He sponsored the balance himself,” said deputy principal Mano Naidoo.

Besides revamping the toilets, additional toilets were added for boys and girls. All seats and cisterns were replaced with security cages built around the cisterns to protect against vandalism.

Doors were installed in each toilet with bolt locks on the inside, floors were tiled, piping was unblocked and replaced where necessary and roving eyes installed for easy maintenance.

“There are now six boys’ and six girls’ fully functional toilets. Sewage will now drain into a septic tank without any spills on the playground. As a sponsorship to the school, Pillay built an additional toilet for the female teachers. A security gate was also installed so that toilets can be secured over night and at weekends,” said Naidoo.

He thanked Pillay and MySchool MyVillage MyPlanet for helping the school in their time of need.
