A movie must for car lovers: Ford vs Ferrari

'Ford vs Ferrari' releases in cinemas on November 22.

Excited guests arrived an hour early at the ‘Ford vs Ferrari’ movie premiere hosted at Cornubia Mall last Tuesday to enjoy cocktails before finding themselves on the edge of their seats at Nu Metro Cinemas, getting caught up in the intense racing scenes.

The parking lot and cinema were abuzz with fans viewing the various Shelby Cobras, Daytonas, GT40s and Super Snakes on display as well as the replica GT40 from the film built by Jimmy Price.

The event is one of the three events around the country which has launched the Shelby Legendary cars brand in South Africa and offers South Africans the opportunity to buy these mechanical works of art with legendary status in the car collector world.

This range of cars, produced under license to Shelby America and entered into the Shelby registry, are manufactured in Port Elizabeth by Jimmy Price’s Hi-Tech Automotive operation.

The movie broadcasts a reflection on the roughhouse relationship between the famous Carroll Shelby and little known Ken Miles – one a legendary father of supercharged Mustangs, and the other a brave Brit willing to bring it under control.

The film, directed by James Mangold, is a studio-made crowd-pleaser led by Academy Award winners Christian Bale and Matt Damon. ‘Ford vs Ferrari’ dramatizes the Ford Motor Co.’s drive to dethrone the reigning power of international racing, Ferrari, at the 1966 Le Mans, the classic 24-hour endurance race.

Damon plays automotive designer Carroll Shelby; Bale plays the headstrong driver Ken Miles. It’s a movie about obsession and drive, in which Shelby and Miles are often chafing at the constricting corporate dictates of Ford.

The stalwart of the Ford brand, the GT40, immortalizes the courage and determination of a British and American partnership to highlight the capacity of European stubbornness coupled with American brass and iron, to topple even the most sacred of iconic motoring brands of the 20th century.
