One robber dead, one injured and a paramedic shot as police chase hijackers near Umdloti

Police and private teams were deployed to locate a suspect still hiding in the sugar cane fields.

One man has been shot dead and a paramedic injured in a shootout between a gang of suspected house robbers near Umdloti today.

One paramedic was shot and lightly injured as the men made their escape into the canefields near the Umdloti N2 offramp.

Paramedics responded to the man who was shot.

According to the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) leader Nazir Sadack, the paramedic arrived on the scene while SAPS officers were involved in a shootout.

One alleged robber was found dead after SAPS officers returned fire.

A shot from one of the alleged robbers penetrated the windscreen and door of the paramedic’s vehicle, injuring Paul Herbst of IPSS Medical Rescue. It is understood he received a flesh wound.

“The medic came under heavy fire and was slightly injured by a bullet,” said Sadack.
