Sand mining hole collapses burying two children alive – KwaDukuza
The children were helping to dig for building sand at the Mbozamo River.
Two young boys died after being buried alive in a hole they were digging on a riverbank in Lindelani township, outside KwaDukuza town on Thursday morning.
According to police the boys, aged 10 and 12, were helping a local man excavate building sand at the Mbozamo River.
It was reported that the man left them alone briefly to offload the sand.
The boys continued digging when the sand caved in, burying them alive in the two metre deep hole.
When the man returned to the riverbank and saw the collapsed hole he alerted the authorities.
KwaDukuza Saps spokesperson, Priya Nunkumar said SAPS Search and Rescue and paramedics had hoped to rescue the children but both boys were found deceased.
“I can confirm an inquest docket has been opened and the matter is being investigated by KwaDukuza SAPS detectives,” said Nunkumar.
