eThekwini opens public spaces, Durban Botanic Gardens, for exercise

Parks will only be allowed to be used for healthy lifestyle exercises, like walking, running, cycling and yoga.

From Monday, July 27, eThekwini municipality will allow residents to keep fit and healthy through exercise at its parks.

Parks will only be allowed to be used for healthy lifestyle exercises, like walking, running, cycling and yoga.

Deputy head of the municipality, Sibusiso Mkhwanazi, reminded citizens that social gatherings remain prohibited.

Other spaces opening include sports grounds and nature reserves.

“The lives of our residents are a priority to us, therefore access to these places will be limited to avoid overcrowding and the maximum number of people in a group allowed is 10.

“This is to ensure that while residents are enjoying themselves, they are also vigilant at the same time,” said Mkhwanazi.

Mkhwanazi said a single entrance will be used to enter the nature reserves and the botanical gardens.

Screening procedures for Covid-19 and temperature checks will be done.

Standard social distancing measures apply, however residents have been asked to not use the ablution facilities.

You may also only exercise in a group of up to 10 people, and only if these people live in the same house as you.

Gym and playground equipment remains restricted.

Park users are also urged to not sit on benches.
