Temporary 112-bed Covid-19 field hospital at KwaDukuza town nears completion

As Covid-19 cases continue to climb in the region, a field hospital is being set up in KwaDukuza town to increase the district’s healthcare capacity.

The temporary 112-bed structure, next to the Transport Department grounds will serve to isolate patients with mild to moderate Covid-19 infections.

This will increase the current 500-bed capacity of General Justice Gizenga Mpanza Hospital (previously Stanger Hospital).

The site is expected to be completed by the end of next week and will serve the estimated population of 600 000 from the iLembe district.

In a recent media briefing KwaZulu-Natal premier, Sihle Zikalala said the province is now ‘in the eye of the storm’ as cases continue to increase at a significant rate.

As of Tuesday, August 4, iLembe district has 3703 confirmed cases, 35 deaths and 2018 recoveries. The total number of cases in the province is 84 361 and 881 deaths.
