Biking is like ‘being in a movie’ says Tongaat’s Preston Pillay

Revving up to 19 000RPM like a Formula 1 car, the ZX-6R 2016 is a 600cc sports bike capable of reaching a top speed of around 275km/h, but one day Preston hopes to add to this as he upgrades from this bike to another.

What started as a childhood passion for motorcycles ended with Tongaat’s Preston Pillay finally getting his first motorbike at the age of 19.

Sticking with the brand of Kawasaki ever since, Preston (24) said what originally drew him into supporting the motorbike company was their iconic Kawasaki Candy Lime Green – sticking out on any road like a Lamborghini would at a VW Beetle convention.

Since his first bike, Preston has moved on from a Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R 2010 to the Kawasaki 2016 model.

Although not the latest, Preston said that what he loved about the bike was its strong build and performance.

While the bike may sport the same performance roughly as a VW Polo TSi, it has a mere weight of 180kgs compared to the Polo which comes in at just over a tonne.

“You can imagine the performance difference between the two owing to the weight difference,” he said.

With his eyes set on owning a Kawasaki H2, the information technology engineer has a passion for software development.

The Kawasaki H2 sports a supercharged two-speed centrifugal 998cc engine, 310 horsepower at 14 000RPM with top speeds having in the past measured at around 400km/h.

It weighs a mere 215.9kg.

Preston also hopes to retire young.

Asked why he explained that his love of the open road drives him to settle early, so he can continue to bike around the North Coast with some of his local biking buddies.

“You have to understand: Driving in a car is like sitting in a movie theatre and being caged. But driving a motorbike… It’s like being in a movie while the sound of the exhaust is like music to your ears,” said Preston.

Preston says that he will continue to support the ever-green brand of Kawasaki, because he enjoys the uniqueness of the brand.

For those keen on getting started on biking, Preston does suggest starting with anything but a superbike.
