First delivery of ‘gifts of gratitude’ hits Alberlito’s frontliners
A single batch costs R5 000 to produce which includes enough gifts to cover all departments in the hospital.
Tired frontline workers were able to enjoy a ‘bite of gratitude’ and be uplifted by words of encouragement after a delivery of delectable treats to Alberlito Hospital last week.
The ‘Love Bites Gifts of Gratitude’ drive was started by Salt Rock resident Marilyn Duke to encourage healthcare workers during the coronavirus pandemic.
Duke is the baker behind ‘That Cake Lady’ and has been baking for most of her life, the last two years in Salt Rock. She bakes bespoke cakes and was inspired to ‘give back’ at a prayer meeting.
“We were praying at Alberlito when we had the idea to put our collective minds and skills together to show of support,” said Duke.
With the support of other members of Freedom House Church in Salt Rock, the ‘Love Bites Gifts of Gratitude’ drive was born.
“We love God and we love people. If you love God you have to love people as He does,” said Duke.
Each cookie, cake pop, muffin and cupcake was delivered with a handwritten card filled with words of support.
Lisa Chetty, spokesperson for Alberlito Hospital said the gifts meant a great deal to the staff.
“We want you to know that the staff are so grateful, even though we cannot let you inside to see their gratitude first hand,” said Chetty.
Although one batch of gifts has been dropped off, Duke and the ‘Love Bites’ team are hoping to continue weekly or more frequently if they are able to.
“At the moment we are planning on going once a week to Alberlito, but we would love to extend the drive to include other hospitals as well.”

Though there has been a groundswell of community support, ‘Love Bites’ are fundraising in order to be able to continue the drive indefinitely.
A Nedbank account has been set up for that purpose and all donations will go directly towards the drive.
