Philocaly Trail back on the Dolphin Coast

Entries have opened for the Philocaly Trail along the North Coast which will see participants walk along the beach from Mtunzini to Sheffield next month.

The Philocaly – meaning the love of beauty – was launched in in 2019 after floods emptied rubbish from inland communities into the ocean, which spat it back out onto local beaches.

The devastation to the coastline prompted organiser Nikki Williamson to do something to raise awareness about plastic pollution and the importance of the ocean.

All the monies raised from the event will be donated equally to 3 charities, Wildoceans, Breathe Conservation and Adopt a River, which champion the environment and marine conservation.

“It is such a magical spot of coastline with the most amazing views, beaches, rock pools and wildlife. The route that we are doing, especially during winter is a very special one,” said Williamson.

This year’s 5-day route will start at Mtunzini on June 23 and continue through to The Hatchery, the Tugela Mouth, Zinkwazi, Blythedale and end at Sheffield Beach on June 27.

The total distance is 84 kilometres.

“I love the ocean, I love the KZN coast and all the beautiful beaches. I love them free of plastic and I believe that single use plastics are an abomination,” said Williamson.

“This walk is about standing up for that.”
