La Mercy lagoon goes dark as thieves dig up and steal cables
While no estimates have been forthcoming from eThekwini municipality with regard to the cost of damage or the repair costs, a local ward councilor said that the lights should be done away with completely.
About 300m of cables that power beach lights at La Mercy lagoon were stolen last weekend.
While no estimates have been forthcoming from eThekwini municipality with regard to the cost of damage or the repair costs, a local ward councilor said that the lights should be done away with completely.
It is believed that the cables were dug up by a number of brazen thieves early on Sunday morning.
“I have suggested that floodlights be installed on the buildings in the area, which would do away with underground cables,” said ward 58 councilor, Geoff Pullan.
Councilor Pullan also questioned why the Metro had not deployed security guards at this and other sites where equipment should be monitored.
