iLembe District – here are your Covid-19 vaccination sites

A further 21 vaccination sites are expected to be opened in the province this week, said KZN premier Sihle Zikalala at a press briefing on Sunday.

Next in line of phase 2 of the rollout will be teachers and support staff at public schools, with vaccinations for this category starting Wednesday, June 9.

Zikalala said a total of 110 400 Johnson and Johnson (J&J) vaccines had been secured for this category.

He said the vaccinations will take place at education district offices from June 9 until June 28.

“Some districts will open new sites, where sites do not already exist, while others will have to designate their existing sites accordingly, to accommodate the teachers. We are also exploring the possibility of opening these vaccination sites on weekends, because educators work Monday to Friday.

“The vaccine is safe and there are plans to register walk-inns at vaccination sites. If your turn has come and you have been notified, please go and get the vaccination, because this is our only hope to stop the spread of the virus and save lives,” he said.

Meanwhile, Zikalala also emphasized that KZN was not yet experiencing a third wave of Covid-19 infections.

“We continue to monitor trends and signals of a resurgence in the province. Our main focus now is to accelerate vaccination and stay highly prepared, should a third wave hit us. Even though the province has not entered the third wave, we should nevertheless remain vigilant and acutely aware of the potential risk of a resurgence of infections.”

Zikalala said a 10% increase in cases over a 7-day moving average would trigger an alert, while a 20% increase in cases over a 7-day moving average would trigger resurgence, which may indicate that the province was entering the third wave.

He said the latest information gathered was that over the past 24 hours, the province has recorded 227 new cases, bringing the total number of confirmed Covid-19 cases to 340 586 and deaths to 10 533.

But the province continued to observe an increase in the number of new cases recorded weekly and this was concerning.

The number of new cases was 726 for week 21 and 900 for week 22.

As of Sunday, June 5 iLembe District recorded 897 active cases – an increase of 45 cases from last Sunday, May 30.

The total number of deaths in the iLembe region is 576.

KZN Health MEC Nomagugu Simelane said the department would be adding more sites as more doses of Johnson & Johnson vaccine are received.

Community vaccination sites will be opened and operated on a staggered basis, in line with demand.

No walk-ins will be allowed at vaccination sites.

You have to be registered to be vaccinated.

If you miss your vaccine appointment you will have to reschedule on the EVDS system.

But if you miss three appointments you will have to go to a vaccination site or phone the Covid-19 hotline to get another appointment.

Four ways to register:

1. Go to the EVDS portal to register: www.vaccine.enroll.health.gov.za
2. You can register on the Covid Whatsapp number by sending ‘Register’ to 0600 123 456.
3. You can also register by SMS by dialling *134*832*your ID number.
4. South Africans who don’t have an ID number can also dial *134*832# for assistance.
