At around 7.30am this morning, a commuting cyclist and taxi were involved in an accident on the Chaka’s Rock onramp on the N2 which proved fatal for the cyclist.

According to witnesses, the man was cycling south along the N2 against the traffic in the emergency lane and may have crossed over where the the northbound onramp joins the N2.

As per Section 323 (1) (b) of the National Traffic Act 93 of 1996, it is illegal to operate a pedal bicycle on a freeway.

The cyclist was yet to be identified from his personal objects, but was described by officers at the scene as “an African man in his early 20s.”

He was carrying a bag which contained 5 high school textbooks leading officers to believe he may have been a student or teacher, though this has not been confirmed

When the taxi and cyclist collided the cyclist’s body was flung across the width of the N2, landing around 30m from the scene.

Debris from the accident was found as far as 40m away.
