67 Flushes for Mandela Day as North Coast Agricultural College gets 25 toilets

North Coast Agricultural College has for more than 35 years received little to no infrastructure support from the education department.

The school’s pupils and staff had only 16 of the school’s 25 toilets in working order for the past 10 years, principal Sunjay Bodasing said, until the installation of new toilets by local plumbers free of charge this weekend.

As part of a Mandela Day initiative, The Institute of Plumbing South Africa (IOPSA) embarked on a 67 minutes operation with the hope of bringing much-needed support to those who need it most.

IPSA North Coast representative and plumber, Barry Chapman suggested the agricultural college and without hesitation the school was approved to be donated and equipped with 25 toilets.

Last Saturday the toilets were installed in 6 hours with fittings, pipes and additional equipment donated by a number of businesses across the province.

These included Build It, Plumbing KZN, Swan Plastics, Simply Bathrooms, North Coast Skip and Toilet Hire, Leak Specialist, Geyser Specialist, Eco Green Plumbing, Drain Specialist and Urban Flow Plumbing.

According to Chapman, the work done collectively amounts to more than R70 000.

Principal Bodasing said they were beyond grateful for the donation.

“It means the world to us to have these toilets donated and installed. Nobody will understand the impact it will have on our students, especially given the current hygiene environment around Covid-19.”

A quintile 4 school, the North Coast Agricultural College is not a high priority on the education department’s list owing to there being many other schools which are in far greater need, said Bodasing.
