Top business advice for entrepreneurs is to ‘not fake it’

Entrepreneurs often get caught in the trap of ‘faking it until they make it’, but this does not have to be the case for you.

Speaking at a virtual Entrepreneurs Workshop in Ballito, chief executive of Sotheby’s International Realty, Yael Geffen said one has to market oneself from a place of authentic confidence.

The Entrepreneurs Workshop is hosted by award-winning businesswomen Margaret Hirsch – director of Hirsch’s – and business coach Marlene Powell and takes place every week on Zoom and Facebook Live.

Yael, who won the 2020 Standard Bank prestigious Top Woman in Property Award, is also a sought-after keynote speaker and explained that the majority of consumers felt authenticity is a key factor when deciding what brands to support.

“They need to be able to trust the brand they are going to interact with.

“Yes, self-promotion is great, but it needs to come from a place of authentic confidence. You need to be the person people want to root for to succeed – not the one they take delight in watching fall,” said Yael.

Powell agreed, adding that it was important to be totally authentic to oneself: “Focus on yourself and your own authenticity. Most people will pick up straight away if you are not authentic and this will affect relationships,” she warned.

Hirsch said the workshops have been put together to encourage small businesses.

“We are here to help you stay strong. Stay resilient, do not pour from an empty cup and try not to attend every argument you get invited to.”

The next Entrepreneurs Workshop will be held this Friday, August 20 from 11am to midday with guest speaker and digital transformation strategist, Farai Mutiwanyuka, founder of The Sprouting Tree Group.

Tips will be given on using simple business automation tools for business productivity.
