Zimbali Rotary has given the gift of sight to more than 1 000 people
Outgoing president Kosh Thaver said the club was trying to secure the donation of an ophthalmic microscope through Rotary International that would double the number of cataract patients the camps could help.
More than 1 000 iLembe residents have been given the miracle of sight over the past 11 years.
The Rotary Club of Zimbali, together with the iLembe district health department, have convened 7 surgery camps in Stanger and Maphumulo between 2011 and 2019.
These camps have been on hold for the past 2 years, though the club is hopeful they will be able to resume next year.
Speaking at the club’s annual dinner, held at the Crowned Eagle restaurant in Zimbali last week, outgoing president Kosh Thaver said the club was busy trying to secure the donation of an ophthalmic microscope through Rotary International that would double the number of cataract patients the camps could help.
Although reduced to 9 members, the club had been working hard at its projects.
Bursaries had been given to 30 Grade 12 students of the Nkosibomvu school in Hambanathi, Tongaat who excel academically, bringing the number to 440 pupils who have benefitted from the programme.
The club had also raised funds for Summerhill House and The North Coast Courier Orphan Fund, donated 2 500 meal packs to families affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, helped Maphumulo Hospital with toiletries and raised funds towards oxygen concentrators for hospitals in India at the request of Rotary clubs in Mumbai and Delhi.
Thaver handed the club leadership over to incoming president for the 2021/22 year, Rotarian Rick Neilands.
The club meets every week at the Bushbuck Club in Zimbali.
