Car plunges into gaping hole on the M4 at Desainager
The driver and three passengers had to be rescued from the wreckage.
A family of four were seriously injured when they drove into the hole on the M4 near Desainager this evening.
A large portion of the road was washed away during the recent floods.
The car plummeted about 5 metres, landing on its roof and trapping a couple travelling with their young adult daughters inside.
Members of the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) were quick to arrive and managed to free them from the vehicle.
Medi Response spokesperson Paul Herbst said the family were from Phoenix and were unfamiliar with the area.
“They were following their GPS and did not realised the road was closed until it was too late. Both daughters received multiple fractures, while the mother and father had minor to moderate injuries,” said Herbst.
The injured were taken to hospital.
