eThekwini appoints contractor to rebuild Othongathi water treatment plant

A contractor was appointed this morning to rebuild the flood-destroyed Othongathi water treatment plant, Metro spokesperson Msawakhe Mayisela said.

At a media briefing today, mayor Mxolisi Kaunda said the plan was to ensure the project would be completed by the first week of October.

“If there are no objections to the procurement process, the contractor will be introduced to the community by the end of the week,” Kaunda said.

As of today (June 1), parts of Tongaat have been without running water for 53 days, with frustrated residents taking to protest action on Monday and today.

Access to the town was blocked off by residents on both occasions this week

“The oThongathi water treatment plant was destroyed during the April floods, leading to much frustration for residents and businesses in the area,” Kaunda said.

To alleviate the challenge of water supply in the interim, he said, an emergency pipeline was installed from the Nyaninga reservoir to Tongaat South reservoir. Communities connected to that zone have been receiving water for up to four hours a day.

“In addition, we have allocated water tankers to service the area, while 48 static tanks have also been installed and 11 boreholes are available. A package plant was also donated to provide non-drinking water to the area.”

It is understood that procurement processes are underway to drill more boreholes.
