Othongathi water plant reconstruction delayed by last minute objection to contractor appointment [Listen]
It could take as long as five months before the Othongathi water treatment plant is rebuilt.
The planned introduction today of a contractor to speed up the reconstruction of the destroyed Othongathi water plant, had to be delayed because of an objection submitted last night.
eThekwini mayor Mxolisi Kaunda said while he intended to introduce the contractor to the Tongaat community today, the objection has to be addressed first.
“I would have been standing here with the contractor now had it not been for the objection. Unfortunately this can take up to four days to resolve,” Kaunda said, speaking at the Othongathi sport centre.

He said the maximum timeframe for rebuilding the plant is now five months, but was hoping it could be completed earlier.
“But the quality of the plant must not be compromised. We need to build a plant that will have a long lifespan and be able to withstand another flood,” the mayor said.

Residents reverted to protest action on Monday and Wednesday, blocking the entrance to Tongaat to complain about the slow progress of getting running water.
The mayor urged residents not to block the roads.
“Tongaat Hulett is fixing the road to the plant, but the blockage of the road yesterday further delayed work,” said Kaunda.
