Tongaat water plant reconstruction project reaches 15% mark – set to be completed in October

Work on rebuilding the Othongathi water treatment plant is in full swing.

Expected to be completed by October, reconstruction of the facility has reached the 15% mark.

This was confirmed by eThekwini mayor Mxolisi Kaunda who visited the plant on Saturday.

“It is pleasing to report the plant has been stabilised and that work has begun on the new power station that will pump water from the plant to more than five reservoirs,” said Kaunda.

He said so far 18 local people had been employed for the project, and more job opportunities would be created as construction continued in phases to restore the plant to its full capacity.

Kaunda said the municipality had provided static tanks in the interim to ensure water supply to affected communities while repairs were being done.

After assessing progress at the plant, Kaunda also conducted a walkabout in the Magwaveni community and interacted with residents on their service delivery challenges.

Since the taps ran dry, there have been several protests around Tongaat, during which residents voiced their dissatisfaction about the poor service delivery of water tankers.
