New exhibition at The Gallery aims to empower women through art
One of the artists who displayed at the exhibition sold all three his art pieces on opening night.
Celebrating the sisterhood, The Gallery pays tribute this Women’s Month to the courageous women who made a difference by fighting for the change their sisters needed during the darkest of South Africa’s times.
On August 9, 1956, some 20 000 women boldly marched to the Union Buildings in Pretoria to protest against the apartheid regime’s extension of pass laws for black women.
It was a key step in future struggles for women’s rights and equality, which slowly and surely continues to break down patriarchal barriers.
“Women are connected, there is a sense of spirit which cannot be broken. We are a sisterhood,” said The Gallery’s curator, Jane Digby, highlighting the name of the latest exhibition: SISTAS.
The collaboration of artists and poets presented their work at Ballito Lifestyle Centre’s The Gallery last Thursday evening, encouraging the sharing of stories, creating dialogue and bridging cultural and gender differences.
One of the participating artists, Gift Dlamini, sold three of his works on opening night. He is a rising star who lives by the words: ‘Without the ability to actualise an idea or concept, art would not exist. If a viewer stops for just a moment to view and reflect on a piece I have created, then I have succeeded in my work,” he said.
