10 000km pilgrimage to save our soil

With the hope of inspiring people to look after the soil, businessman and member of Save Soil, Tseke Nkadimeng, has embarked on a 10 000km journey on foot across the country.

Joining him in the initiative are military veteran Parker Mamabolo and friend Bimbo Kgosane. The group has so far completed 1 000km of their trek and arrived in Ballito last week before heading off to tackle the rest of the 9 000km.

Ballito residents Anjasi Mothilal and Anil Patel joined the team from Stanger to Ballito via the R102 to pledge their support.

“It was quite exciting and I was totally surprised when I reached Ballito within just 5 hours without any breaks,” said Anjasi, who also walked from Durban North to North Beach with the team.

Their journey began in Mpumalanga last month and they still have more than seven months to go to complete their challenge.

“For millennia life on earth has been sustained by a thin layer of fertile soil on the Earth’s crust. About 87% of all life on the planet depends on this for survival, with 95% of our food coming from the soil. This important ecosystem is, unfortunately, dying silently right beneath our feet and turning into mere sand not capable of producing food. We need to plant more trees to prevent this from happening,” said Nkadimeng.

Save Soil is a global movement to address the soil crisis by bringing together people from around the world to promote soil health, especially among world leaders who can institute national policies to increase and safeguard organic content in cultivable soil.
