Building of a R77-million bridge begins on the R74 at Maphumulo [Watch]
KwaZulu Natal Transport MEC Sipho Hlomuka introduced the contractor, WSM Group, to the community on Tuesday.
A R77-million bridge project on the R74 to reconnect KwaDukuza, Maphumulo, Kranskop and Greytown is underway and expected to be completed within six to seven months.
The provincial road through Maphumulo was washed away during floods in December 2021 when an Armco pipe culvert was washed away, creating a huge sinkhole.
On Tuesday, KwaZulu Natal Transport MEC Sipho Hlomuka introduced the contractor, WSM Group, to the community at the Maphumulo community hall.
Hlomuka said the road was strategic for the provincial economy, as it was mainly used by heavy vehicles to transport agricultural produce.
He said engineers had advised constructing a bridge in place of the original road.
“Local subcontractors must also benefit from this project and local people must be employed. The contractor might come with his own skilled workers, but general workers must be people from Maphumulo,” said Hlomuka.
He urged leaders and community members not to employ politics when recruiting workers.
“We must all understand that hunger does not belong to any political party and everyone deserve the opportunity to get a job.
“Any political differences we might have must be put aside. The focus must be on working together and completing this project which is critical for this community,” Hlomuka said.
