Illegal dumping at KwaDukuza sparks fire
The simple act of flicking a cigarette carelessly saw the butt ignite a pile of illegally dumped trash.
The scourge of illegal dumping in KwaDukuza has again reared its head, with a fire recently caused as a result.
On the night of August 31, a fire began on Gibson Road in KwaDukuza town when a still lit cigarette was allegedly tossed next to the roadside, setting a rubbish pile alight.
The landing spot of the cigarette was where illegal dumping has become a serious problem.
Had there not been a swift response, the fire could have spread.
“This is becoming a serious issue here in ward 16 and elsewhere across KwaDukuza, causing unhygienic conditions and becoming an eyesore. I urge residents to use proper waste disposal facilities or something bad is going to happen,” said Democratic Alliance PR councillor, Nerish Singh.
Singh said he has lobbied the municipality to help, but that residents should also contribute by stopping illegal dumping.
