Queen Elizabeth awards Simbithi local Chris Martin for his humanitarian work

Simbithi resident Chris Martin received an award from Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II for his efforts of promoting humanitarian and charitable work.

Martin, head of special projects and acting regional director for St John South Africa’s East Coast and inland areas, was one of three South Africans who were recognised at a recent awards evening in Johannesburg.

St John is one of the oldest and most respected non-governmental organisations in the world, with roots stemming from the 11th century.

It is part of the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St John in Jerusalem, a global chivalric order of the British Crown. Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, is the Sovereign Head.

His efforts in promoting humanitarian and charitable work, and for personifying the ethos of St John, is what landed Martin the award.

The global movement delivers first aid, care and similar services through a dedicated team of more than 250 000 volunteers and staff in over 40 countries and territories.

“St John is a phenomenal organisation and to the receive the award is a great honour,” said Martin.

“The order of St John is a royal order of chivalry and as an employee I try to contribute in terms of volunteer work as much as I can. This includes youth development and fundraising.”

Through collective efforts, Martin has raised around R4.5-million which has gone toward training some 150 youth in fields which include caregiving, nursing, community health work and bridging courses, among others.

One of the projects included a youth exchange programme in Germany.
