Father drowns while rescuing daughter at Thompson’s Bay, Ballito

The man's daughter had been knocked into the water while they were taking photographs at the famous 'Hole in the Wall'.

Tragedy struck at a Ballito beach this evening when a man drowned after reportedly rescuing his daughter from the water.

The Durban man (47) was taking photos with his family from the ‘Hole in the Wall’ at Thompson’s Bay when his daughter was swept into the ocean by a wave.

“It is understood that he dove in after the child and was able to pull her up onto the rocks but was knocked back into the water and sucked out to sea,” said Paul Herbst from Medi Response KZN.

“On arrival of rescue crews he was spotted floating in the ocean.”

“Rescue swimmers entered the water and managed to return to shore with him,” said Herbst.

He could not be resuscitated.

The drowning occurred after the lifeguard duty hours.

The drowning victim’s family were believed to have been visiting the North Coast for a picnic today.
