#Review: Gerald & Wells take me from ‘no frills girl’ to ‘wedding-ready’

The brief was 'simple': I'm a no frills girl with very little time. I need to be able to turn my head upside down for a quick blow dry in the morning and run. But to make it a little tricky, I also had a wedding to attend the next day and I wanted to have a zhoosh look. Could he do both?

Finding a hairstylist you trust can be a nail-biting experience, especially when you’ve been burned before.

Everyone has at least one horror story to tell. For me, the trauma I experienced as a shy 15-year-old is still fresh in my memory.

The hairdresser gave me a square fringe and lopped off my long straight hair just above my shoulders. I looked like an awkward Cleopatra.

The mean kids did not miss the opportunity to point it out either. Now, as a working mom I often neglect my hair and leave it way too long between cuts because I struggle to find the time. I just tie it up and go.

Pam gave me a fabulous massage while washing my hair.

So when I was offered an opportunity to be treated to a Gerald & Wells experience at Ballito Lifestyle Centre I was both seriously in need of some hair help – and a little nervous.

But the vivacious Jimmi Laubscher put me at ease with his flamboyant Cape Town style and laid back manner.

Yes, and he nailed it.

Jimmi cut it short but still long enough to tie up for exercise. He threw in a few highlights to give my chestnut brown hair a sun-kissed look and styled it with wicked messy curls for the wedding (definitely something I cannot do at home).

A few weeks later and I am loving the ease with which I can make it look good, fast.
