Four dead in head-on collision on N2 near Umvoti – traffic heavily affected
One of the vehicles involved is understood to have been a staff transport shuttle for Hesto Harnesses.
A horrific head-on collision between a taxi and a bakkie on the N2 northbound between the Umvoti Toll Plaza and KwaDukuza has claimed four lives, with multiple other patients left in critical condition.
At around 6.45am this morning, a bakkie travelling southbound at the ‘Sappi bend’ towards the Umvoti Toll allegedly lost control and veered through the centre median, said Medi Response KZN spokesperson, Paul Herbst.
“After crossing into the northbound lane, the bakkie slammed into a taxi with 12 occupants, causing the taxi to roll and ejecting the driver of the bakkie,” he said.
The driver was one of the four fatalities, the other three a man and two women travelling in the taxi.

“It is understood the taxi was a shuttle for employees of Hesto Harnesses on their way to work,” said Herbst.
Multiple other occupants sustained injuries from moderate to severe.
Two were left trapped for almost an hour after the accident, but have since been freed by the KwaDukuza Fire Department in conjunction with emergency services on scene.
The left northbound lane is closed and is expected to be for some time as clean-up crews clear the remnants of the wreckages.
Although the right lane is open, traffic had bottlenecked and backed up all the way to the Umvoti Toll at 8am, with delays likely for the next few hours.
