Orphan Fund breaks fundraising record
In the final six months of former fundraising coordinator Mpume Vilakazi's tenure, she raised a record R380 000.
Thanks to the consistent support and generosity of the North Coast community, The North Coast Courier Orphan Fund has been able to raise more money than ever before for orphans and vulnerable children.
The Orphan Fund committee met for their quarterly meeting on July 20 to determine the fund’s allocations.
The money raised (and distributed) during the months March through to August 2022 is reflected in the table.
This was fundraising coordinator Mpume Vilakazi’s final meeting as she has returned to Johannesburg, but the final six months of her tenure saw a record R380 000 raised.
Her replacement, Charmaine Premlal, comes with an excellent background in fundraising, bringing new energy, ideas and vision.
Over the past six months monies collected for the Orphan Fund include:
The annual Golf Day at Umhlali Country Club raised a record R140 000. The day began with a sponsorship by Zimbali Lakes seeing young boys from Enduduzweni given golf lessons by McKenna Academies head coach, Emile Steinmann.
Then local golfers turned out in numbers to enjoy the event, which was followed by an entertaining prize giving.
Two interesting auctions, a weekend of driving a brand new BMW iX from SMG Ballito sold for R19 000, while a 2004 Champions Trophy Protea shirt donated by cricket legend Lance Klusener sold for R9 000.
Marshall Security truly came to the party with a major sponsorship of this event.
More than R14 000 were raised during the very successful inaugural Quiz Night held at Mozambik Restaurant in Ballito.
The third annual ladies tea at the Waterberry had excellent speakers.
The floral theme was embraced by those who attended, and sponsored lucky draws and a prize for the best dressed lady were followed by an auction of local artist Natalie Deeb’s painting, making for an enjoyable and successful morning and bringing in more than R10 000.
Other notable donations included:
R20 000 from the Dordet Family Trust, which has been supporting the Orphan Fund faithfully for many years.
A R50 000 donation from Hollywood Foundation was allocated as follows:
R25 000 for Safe Haven where a retaining wall has been built, and
R25 000 for Smile with Us to refurbish the crèche container and awnings. (Some of these costs are listed under Stanger Hardware in the table).

Most of the money raised by the Orphan Fund is distributed to orphan care projects and to gogos who care for orphans and vulnerable children.
Their only other income is usually a small pension. The distribution is much in the form of food vouchers redeemable at Lali Foods, as well as school transport money.
The Orphan Fund is audited and registered as a non-profit organisation and has also been approved by the Receiver of Revenue for tax exemption.
This means that donors can receive a tax deduction on donations made.
