Arrested burglary suspect at Sheffield Beach dies at Umhlali police station

A 39-year-old man arrested for burglary died at the Umhlali police station on Saturday.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Nqobile Gwala, said police were called by IPSS Security officers to arrest a man they had caught who had allegedly committed a burglary at Sheffield Lane.

“He was arrested and on arrival at the police station officers realised the man was not breathing and an ambulance was called. He was confirmed dead at the scene,” said Gwala.

She said an inquest docket was opened for further investigation.

“A post-mortem will be conducted to determine the cause of death.”

IPSS Security CEO Frank Labidi said his officers had witnessed a man fleeing from the premises.

He was apprehended on Sheffield Beach and found in possession of a flat screen TV.

Labidi said Umhlali Saps only arrived three hours later.

“The suspect was brought by Saps Umhlali to the police station, obviously alive and without any visible injuries, otherwise the police officers would have refused to take him to the station as this is standard procedure. About two hours after handing over the suspect, IPSS was contacted by the transporting officer, who alleged the suspect had been found deceased in the rear of the secured police vehicle. I personally arrived at the station and told the official not to make any unfounded allegations as to an “alleged” involvement of IPSS Security personnel, but to follow the correct channels to determine the cause of death.”
