Woman rescued by lifeguards at unprotected Catfish Beach after swimming offshore
The two lifeguards were called by passersby who noticed the woman in distress.
Just after three o’clock this afternoon, a 25-year-old woman had to be rescued after she got into difficulty while swimming at Catfish Beach.
Catfish Beach is an unprotected beach in front of Little Maritzburg Road between Salt Rock and Chaka’s Rock.
It is currently unknown how she got into trouble, but it is understood she entered the water and swam offshore before passersby noticed her in distress, said Medi Response KZN spokesperson, Paul Herbst.
KwaDukuza lifeguard superintendent, Bongani Xulu, confirmed that two of the Salt Rock Main Beach lifeguards were called to help and arrived in time to pull the woman to safety.
“I want to commend my guys for getting there so quickly to save her. People must please always remember to swim at guarded beaches to ensure their safety,” said Xulu.
The woman was stabilised by paramedics before being transported to hospital for further check-ups.
Guarded beaches include Clarke Bay, Willard Beach, Thompson’s Bay, Salt Rock Main Beach, Tinley Manor, Blythedale and Zinkwazi.
Out of season, KwaDukuza’s lifeguards are on duty daily from 8am to 4pm, increasing their hours from 6am to 6pm in peak season.
