Ballito Scouts free snared bush pig at Harold Johnson Nature Reserve
One group was making headway around the last loop of the trail when a bush pig suddenly came charging at them through the bush, only to end up running straight into a snare.
Few scouts get to claim they’ve had a full survival camp package experience, but the Ballito Scouts group can certainly claim extra points after being stormed by a bush pig at the Harold Johnson Nature Reserve recently.
It was a standard weekend away for the scouts to test their general survival skills in the wild.
Based at a remote part of the reserve, the Marula campsite, the scouts were taught the basics of survival, which included building a shelter with poles, rope and tarps, how to light fires using flint, and how to navigate their way without a compass.
Assistant troop scouter Kylie Jones said after breakfast they decided to split up in groups for a 10km hike through the reserve, taking on some of the challenging hilly trails.

“The scouts were obviously shaken, some dropping their backpacks and one scout taking off, becoming separated from the group,” Jones said.
With the bush pig trapped, Jones said they had come prepared to call in backup in case of an emergency and lead scout Katelyn Tabori-Clarke called in the leaders for help.
“The scouts refused to return to camp, not wanting to leave the injured animal on its own.”
While the team leaders were on the way to the site they found the missing scout who had headed home at top speed.
“Finding the bush pig exhausted from its struggles, they were able to release it,” said Jones.
After a break during the Covid-19 pandemic, the Ballito Scouts are back in action and enjoying their outdoor adventures.
