Head-on collision near Tugela River kills 5, leaves multiple injured

It was the second of two accidents within an hour, after another one near Zinkwazi left four injured earlier on.

A horrific accident on the N2 near the Tugela River this morning claimed the lives of five people, the latest in a spate of road deaths on the highway.

It was the second of two accidents within an hour, after another near Zinkwazi left four injured earlier on.

The primary collision occurred just before 8am however, when a car carrying eight people and a bakkie carrying two crashed head-on between the Tugela River and Zinkwazi.

“The cause of the accident is currently unclear and it is not known which vehicle crossed the centre median into oncoming traffic. Parts of both the northbound and southbound lanes are blocked,” said IPSS Medical Rescue spokesperson, Dylan Meyrick.

The five people who were killed on impact, two adult females, one adult male and two teenage girls, were all in the car, he said.

Two of the three remaining passengers were also seriously injured and have been transported to a nearby hospital, while the third escaped with minor injuries.

Both passengers in the bakkie were seriously injured and have also been taken for further monitoring in hospital.

KwaDukuza Saps and KwaDukuza Fire Services were on scene to investigate the incident. Traffic remains heavily affected in both directions.

There have been at least ten deaths on the N2 between Umvoti and the Tugela within the last month, indicating a dangerous section of the highway.

Drive with caution in the area, particularly during poor weather conditions as seen this morning.
