Maphumulo leadership faces no confidence motion

The African National Congress has raised a motion of no confidence against the mayor of Maphumulo municipality, Siboniso Nyatikazi, and speaker Musawenkosi Ngidi.
At a press briefing on Monday morning, the party’s regional spokesperson Thandeka Mkhize said the ANC had submitted the motion to the speaker and it was expected to be tabled at a council meeting on Thursday this week.
Mkhize said some of the reasons for the motion were a lack of service delivery, management instability, abuse of the municipality transport fleet and illegal security contracts.
The municipality is led by a coalition between the Inkatha Freedom Party and Economic Freedom Fighters.
Regarding service delivery, Mkhize claimed the current leadership had decided to abandon “all planned projects without any alternatives”.
“This demonstrates that the current Exco not only lacks vision, capacity and a willingness to provide basic services to the needy as prescribed in the Municipal Systems Act and other prescripts but also views the municipal budget as a political wallet to disburse political patronage.”
She said the municipality had been running on auto-pilot without stable management following a political decision to remove competent senior management.
“The positions of municipal manager, chief financial officer and head of corporate services have been left vacant. Those occupying these posts in an acting capacity have been doing so for an extended period with no indication of a plan to employ permanent professionals. This has had a direct negative impact on the municipality’s capacity to deliver basic services.”
Mkhize said other public complaints dealt with, among others, heavy machinery used for fixing and gravelling roads being allocated selectively to IFP-controlled wards.
The Maphumulo municipality had not responded to our request for a response at the time of going to print.
