Cooking up a storm at Ballito Neighbourhood Watch potjie competition

Forty-three teams cooked up mouthwatering potjie goodness, catering for everyone from vegans to the meat-crazy.

Despite poor weather conditions, residents turned out in full force for the Ballito Neighbourhood Watch (BNW) potjie competition – one of the most successful ever.

Forty-three stands together cooked up around 50 pots of mouthwatering potjie goodness on Saturday, catering for everyone from vegans to the meat-crazy.

Held at Townsend Park, there was a palpable community spirit as hundreds tucked into the delicious offerings at every stall.

The CMH Nissan team of Sanjeev Ramouthan, Kuveshan and Cyril Arumugan and KK Vilakazi made a sumptuous oxtail and kidney bean potjie.

With a host of activities accompanying the cook-off, including Zorb Balls, a reptile show by Ndlondlo Reptile Park, jumping castles, face painting and more, both kids and adults were suitably entertained throughout.

“We are really thrilled with the turnout this year and thank the community and sponsors for supporting us, and also the stall holders who made it possible,” said BNW chairman, Morné Steffens.

The Da Costa Inc team cooked up a delicious Moroccan lamb and red wine feast. Pictured are Hazel Ngcobo, Reinette van den Berg, Chevon Pillay-Govender, Melody Egan, Taf Sibanda, Ronica Naidoo and Nicola Drinn.

The winners of the best potjie – which has become a coveted prize with significant bragging rights – went to the PME Attorneys team for their oxtail pot.

The best dressed stand prize went to Wozza Meats, while the best team spirit honours were claimed by Marshall Security.

The RAH Maintenance team of Marco, Helene, Philup Snr and Philup Jnr Jansen, with Erin Holdstock, Ryno Jansen and Liechay de Meyer cooked up a venison potjie.

There were also a host of spot prizes and auctions won on the day, sponsored by Prince’s Grant, Blue Horizons, Rossi South Africa, Manor Liquors, Hudson Photography and Lantek Computers. Although final fundraising figures are yet to be announced, Steffens confirmed it had been a highly successful day for the BNW.

“We are always looking to update and improve our services, which we think have a unique place in Ballito’s security network in conjunction with Saps, the municipality and local security providers,” he said.
