MakerSpace produces digitally savvy entrepreneurs

The MakerSpace Foundation, headed by Salt Rock resident Steve Gray, recently launched a digital skills programme in partnership with the United Nations Development Program.

Since July, the six-month programme has been providing digital training, work readiness and entrepreneurial mindset development to 20 unemployed youth in eThekwini.

The programme is intended to prepare unemployed young people for the job market, mostly females who have no formal training.

After completing the training, they will be given work placement opportunities with top corporates in Durban at companies such as the Mr Price group, Barrows, Unilever and RCL Foods. Work placements start in December and run until November 2023, with coaching and support from The MakerSpace continuing.

During the launch, participants had the opportunity of demonstrating some of their news skills, including 4IR technologies such as virtual reality, drone flying, laser cutting, digital design, and 3D printing.

The MakerSpace also demonstrated its sustainability project, The Baobab of Durban, co-created by Veolia, which includes the Innovative Waste Design Studio and the Urban Permaculture Food Garden.

The showcase included a mini business fair, with six of the participants showcasing their businesses, including tree felling, boutique clothing, baking, sustainable jewellery, beauty and laundry services.

The MakerSpace is based at 51 Station Drive in Durban and exists to share knowledge and equipment that enables anyone to make anything.
