Man revived by lifeguard at Clarke Bay following near drowning
Granny's Pool at Clarke Bay is a popular swimming spot for visitors and locals alike.
A man in his late 20s received lifesaving CPR this afternoon after almost drowning in the Clarke Bay tidal pool.
The circumstances leading up to the near drowning are unclear, but it is understood that the man’s heart had stopped by the time CPR began.
“A member of the public noticed the man in trouble and got the attention of a passing KwaDukuza municipality lifeguard who was on patrol.
“The lifeguard pulled the man from the water and initiated CPR,” said Medi Response KZN spokesperson, Paul Herbst.
By all accounts it was just in the nick of time and the lifeguard was able to restart the man’s pulse before further lifesaving interventions were implemented by arriving paramedics.
The man was conscious, but delirious by the time he was transported to hospital for further monitoring.
In cases like this, there is potential for water in the lungs and brain damage caused by the stopping of the heart.
“An excellent job done by the lifeguard resulted in a good outcome. Well done to all involved,” said Herbst.
