Angered by unfinished RPD houses, Etete protesters block R102
Ward 20 councillor Nicholas Bhengu said the community has been misled.
Violent protesters closed the R102 in Etete yesterday, allegedly complaining about the delay in the construction of their RDP houses.
Umhlali police spokesperson Vinny Pillay said three men had been arrested for public violence. He said the angry group of protesters stoned cars, burned tyres and offloaded a truck carrying sand.
“They said the company assigned to construct the houses had left the area without finishing its contract. Police are in the area but the road is currently still closed,” said Pillay.
Ward 20 councillor Nicholas Bhengu said the community had been misled by certain people.
“The company, Matthews Construction, has not abandoned the project but left because it had completed the phase it was paid to do, which was installing the sewer system and building internal roads. They will return for the next phase once funding has been allocated,” said Bhengu.
He said he does not know who decided to take a loudhailer and mislead the community. He said more than 1 000 houses are to be constructed and the project was currently in phases 4 and 5.
