Beacon of Care high tea fundraiser
Anyone with life-limiting illnesses such as cancer, lung disease, progressive neurological conditions, kidney or liver failures are eligible for support.
Beacon of Care (BoC) hosted a well-supported high tea on Saturday to raise crucial funds for the palliative care services they offer.
Held at the Ballito Gesinskerk, the attending ladies enjoyed a talk by guest speaker Linda Marsden-King, as well as a few songs from Leila Spangenberg.
BoC is a non-profit organisation based in Ballito, which offers at-home care to critically ill patients from Tinley Manor to Frasers and inland to Shakaskraal.
The organisation does accept fees from patients who can afford it – all of which go back into the care services – but it also takes care of patients who do not have funds.
Ideally, BoC hope to reach a point where 50% of their patients are non-paying.
This year, the group of doctors, nurses, counsellors and therapists has seen 594 patients, 186 of whom were non-paying.
BoC is completely comprised of enterprising women trying to give back to their communities by providing medical, social, psychological and spiritual care to patients.

Palliative care practitioners help with physical pain and treatment, but also provide support and guidance through the difficult processes that come at the end of one’s life.
Medical aid rates are charged for the services, which are at the forefront of current medical trends worldwide, where more people are being treated in their homes.
Whether it is people worrying about skyrocketing hospital costs, or simply feeling more comfortable in familiar surroundings, at-home care is becoming increasingly common.
But, of course, this comes with a cost, too and BoC is appealing to potential donors who may be able to assist the group to increase their patient load.
