Entrepreneur Charlton Nyamadzawo is on the move [Watch]

Owner of local engineering company Haka Manufacturing, Charlton Nyamadzawo, recently claimed second prize in the iLembe Chamber of Commerce’s entrepreneur competition, but feels as though he took the top spot.

In the weeks following the competition, the Ballito resident said the competition served to propel his business to new levels, and he has plans to keep up the momentum of growth.

Based at Shakaskraal, the business manufactures block-making machines, hosepipe reels, racer brackets, canoe pedals, gas burners, tine shoes and ends, tap locks, prototypes of original equipment, precision machine parts, sheet metal and bearing housings.

Armed with an accounting degree, he first joined Haka Manufacturing – then known by another name – in 2008, and worked there for 10 years before being afforded the opportunity to buy it when the owner retired.

He has since then taken the company to new heights.

The 46-year-old Zimbabwean-turned-South African today employs 10 people.

“We’ve had challenges such as the Covid-19 pandemic, last year’s unrest and the floods earlier this year, but we continue to grow,” he said.

Speaking on how The Entrepreneur Competition helped him take his business to the next level, he said: “It was a great platform and we extend our thanks to the team at the Chamber. We have never been busier. The competition really leveraged us to do more. We’ve also been able to help upskill more people from the local community since then.”

The 20-year-old company, which currently exports to Namibia, Lesotho and Eswatini, has partnered with Umfolozi TVET College to help teach youth new skills.
