Christmas Country Fair goes large, drawing in over 5 000 visitors

This year's fair also marked 70 years since it first started in 1952.

The hugely anticipated and one of the largest fundraiser fairs in the province, The Christmas Country Fair at Collisheen Estate, again attracted thousands of people this year.

Making the most of their first time displaying at the fair were Pumzile and Zi Zama.

According to Christmas Fair Fund chairlady, Gaby Lyle, the turnout at the weekend was beyond expectations as about 5 000 people attended over three days.

Making the occasion even more special was the fact that the fair celebrated its 70th anniversary, the first being held in 1952 to raise funds to buy a car for a clinic sister. It was held at Jex’s Farm in Umvoti.

The Christmas Fair Fund ladies had a busy time ensuring smooth operations.

Adding extra flair to the 70th celebration was the attendance of Pam Hopkins (91), who recalled helping out for the first time at the fair in 1970 when funds were raised for Stanger High School.

Enjoying some champagne during the anniversary celebrations were Wilma Cremer and Denise Bowditch, with Sphe Mlima in attendance.

“I never expected the fair to grow to the size it is today. It is truly wonderful to see what a success it has become,” said Hopkins.

Toasting to the success of the 70th fair – Wendy Sparks, Claire Regaud, Les Downs, Verne Terry, Lorna Cooke and Olga Serton.

The event serves as the main fundraiser for the Fair Fund, which supports 28 charities between the Tongaat and Tugela rivers.

Having a blast were Debbie Finch, Pam Hopkins and Fran Jex.
