KwaDukuza mayor warns cheating contractors
Nine projects worth R38-million were handed over to contractors last Friday along with a warning that if they performed poorly council would deal with them harshly.
KwaDukuza mayor Lindile Nhaca said the municipality would be taking decisive action against contractors who perform poorly on infrastructure projects.
The municipality last Friday handed over nine projects to contractors worth R38-million for the rehabilitation and reconstruction of infrastructure destroyed or damaged by the April floods.
The projects include: Yellowwood Industrial Area bridge (ward 16), Sugra and Mbozama bridge (ward 17), Stormwater culvert bridges (ward 18), Smithers Bridge (ward 19), Venus Drive (ward 26), Kwamfonomdala bridge (ward 20), Nkobongo bridge (ward 8), Shisampama pedestrian bridge (ward 28) and the Etsheni wooden bridge (ward 21).
In July the municipality was allocated grant funding of R109-million towards the rehabilitation and reconstruction of roads, stormwater infrastructure and bridges.
“Contractors who perform poorly on municipal projects will be put to task as we no longer want to commit our money to be wasted. Shoddy workmanship and delays will become a thing of the past as we take a no-nonsense approach in dealing with contractors. The council will be dealing harshly with such tendencies as they amount to nothing but wasteful expenditure,” said Nhaca.
She pleaded with residents to look after the projects and report theft on construction sites, acts of intimidation and shoddy workmanship.
