eThekwini reopens Umdloti and Casuarina beaches
Numerous tests have confirmed these beaches to be safe for swimming.
eThekwini today reopened two popular beaches just as holiday makers surge toward the coast for the Christmas break.
Traffic volumes recorded at Mariannhill toll plaza showed 1 676 cars heading toward the coast, with Tongaat Toll Plaza recording 1 505 cars heading north, and 1 365 heading south – a first-hand sight of what promises to be a bumper season with figures recorded this morning until 11am.
After independent test results showed Umdloti’s beach to be clear for swimming, government conducted its own tests and finally gave the go ahead, reopening Umdloti Main, Umdloti Tidal Pool and Casuarina Beach at Tongaat.
eThekwini Metro this morning announced the reopening of these beaches after the Metro received the proverbial ‘thumbs up’ from the Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (EDTEA).
Metro mayor, Mxolisi Kaunda welcomed the news.
“We are happy that more beaches are reopening. We will continue to work together with all stakeholders and experts to ensure that we comply with safety standards,” he said.
